    You got it.

My generator isn't very loud. The water rushing out the exhaust is louder
than anything else. Besides, it sits about 2' away from someone sleeping
in the salon (under the floor) and about 10-15' away from ME sleeping in the
    master stateroom (amidships).

I can't hear it over the AC fan in the master stateroom and can BARELY hear
the injector noise over the AC fan in the salon.

We're talking about noise levels that are quite low here. Now if you want to
bitch about someone running their MAINS (on a sportfish or other large, loud
boat) during the night I agree - unless there's a darn good reason (like my
anchor is dragging and I need to move to re-set it) to do so.

    But my generator?

    Give me a break.

If its reasonable outside, I can open up the hatches and portholes and
get enough airflow to be comfortable, I shut it down. I have more than enough
reserve capacity to run the anchor light through the night and flush the
head a couple of times - which is all I need most of the time.

But if I'm watching a movie on my DVD player, running my AC, or making
myself an espresso (the comment about the guy with the Azimut was spot-on -
I have one of those on MY boat, but nowhere near a $900 machine!) I'm damn
well gonna turn up the genset.

I don't like the wear and tear, nor the additional risk of the genny running
overnight, even though both are, relatively speaking, rather small and I'm
protected as best I'm able against catastrophes.

But if its 90+ degrees and 99% humidity out, it's gonna be running while I'm
swinging on the hook. If you don't like that because I'm a big sportfish
rather than some minimalist cruising sailboater, and I have both the money
to buy the genset and the fuel budget to run it, then tough noogies.

I have to listen to your screaming wind generator or your halyards banging
around on or in your mast. I don't bitch about either of those noise
sources, and they are a LOT more disturbing to me than the soft rumble
of a genset under my deck.

You don't own the water any more than I do, and I accept as part of the
price of being on the water the fact that I can't have absolute silence if
    there are other humans around.

If you want silence and only the sounds of nature then head offshore and
put 20 nm between yourselves and every other living human soul.

You can have what you want any time you want.

IMHO what's rude is trying to play dictator to others when you choose to be
there with them - especially when the sea is so vast that you can have
whatever you want, any time you want.
