I sure missed your request for information or I would have told you that the
fiber optic-connected remote head ICOM units had been a disaster from day
one. In fact, they discontinued that model a long time ago. I had a friend
in Annapolis who had one and ICOM offered him a very generous trade-up deal
to the current model (one that doesn't have the fiber optic cable), rather
than deal with the deluge of warranty complaints. He was preparing to shove
off to go cruising and I haven't heard from him in awhile, but contact Will
at mailto: and see how he did it.
Of course Don Melcher makes a good deal of money doing installations, but
there is nothing magic about doing it yourself. In this particular case I
doubt the problem is your installation (particularly for receive
problems--if you were having trouble transmitting, that's a different
question). You've probably bought a bum box from a discounter who
specializes in moving case loads of out of production items that are, for
very good reason, are no longer manufactured. I imagine your deal was "as
is."
Press ICOM for an upgrade.
Also remember, it's the cheap man that pays the most.
