There are three-band GSM phones that will work basically everywhere. A US
phone is GSM-1900, and will not work in the the rest of the world - wrong
frequency.
Get a 3-band, unlocked phone and you're set.
The trick is to get a SIM card from the other provider; the provider is none
the wiser that you have more than one, since only one is in the phone at a
given time!
