I keep seeing people arguing on the use of hydrogen peroxide and now versus
betadine. well there's really no need to argue - both are good but for
different reasons.
Betadine is high bacteriostatic - it kills bacteria quite nicely. It also
causes tissue damage if left on a wound too long.
Hydrogen Peroxide would be used to hyperoxygenate a wound that could be
dirty - the idea is to kill any anerobic bacteria by increasing oxygen
content.
So in a dirty wound I would first clean with plain old clean water - warm or
cold doesn't matter - the idea is just to flush adequately to get rid of any
bacteria on the wound. If so desired that can be followed by betadine or
if the wound is really dirty a betadine scrub - followed with hydrogen
peroxide and finally followed by either normal saline or sterile water.
In the field your not going to have these niceties generally. So the
betadine if you have it will work and the hydrogen peroxide if you have it
will help.
both products have merits for different reasons.
