The main problem that Owen has is that the older Toshiba's had the power
supply built into the laptop. The AC cord simply conveyed AC from the wall
to the back of the laptop. This was handy since you didn't have a large
power supply brick to lug around in additional to the laptop. But it means
that the only way to get 12VDC into the laptop is via the surgery that Owen
is attempting.
As to solving your problem Owen, there are simple DC voltage regulator
circuits which can be built. Check out
http://www.mitedu.freeserve.co.uk/Circuits/Power/lm317.htm for an example.
I've run across various simple schematics searching the internet. In your
case, you'd probably want to temporarily use a potentiometer to determine
the exact resistance that would provide 12VDC from the circuit. Then build
it using the correct resistor(s). That way you don't have to worry about
having the pot set wrong. On the other hand, you could use the zenier diode
like the above circuit uses to indicate if it's set correctly.
Disclaimer: I am hack at this kind of stuff. I can build and implement, but
don't have a strong enough background to determine the accuracy of the
circuits. Use at your own risk.
