    Win2K professional. However, it is the French version.

    Most of the problems I have noticed occur when there is more than one
    user using the machine (ie. multiple user accounts) or you have tried to
    set security settings tight.

    I find most people that use it as a single-user consumer system have few
    problems until some time goes by. I have to admit for the first 3 months
    it was quite reliable. However, I've noticed as time goes by the
    registry fills up and the system accumulates more "junk" it becomes less
    and less reliable no matter how often you clean it, which i find is the
    opposite of a linux/bsd system (once you finally get the thing
    configured and up properly, it runs till the hardware dies =} ).

    Keep in mind, I am also talking from the perspective of a guy who bashes
    the hell out of my machine. Most people would not be doing what I do to
    my machines or servers. =}

    Like I said, mileage and happiness may vary. I don't think Windows is
    totally bad, and there are some things is it still does better than
    linux/bsd (Access is quite a good interface for relational databases
    actually). I just find for my personal needs I really prefer linux for
    reliablility, security, extensibility, and remote abilities. It just
    annoys me sometimes when I am forced to use windows stuff (like for my
    MSc, some of the software required was *only* MS and equivalents were
    not accepted... ie. projects required VB/IIS/Access when a better
    substitute was Apache/MySQL/PHP).

    Also, as I build large systems I really tend to notice the cost
    differences. For an individual user it is probably not so noticeable,
    but when you're talking over $100k for windows licenses (plus the
    hardware costs of more powerful machines to run it and the software you
    need which is free) other options start to look mightily attractive. =}

    ciao!
    Daryl.
