OK, I'm really sorry to disagree, but I run the systems for a medium
sized investment bank and I have to say that virtually every problem I
had on the network or with machines came from Win98/Win2k systems (and
they were patched continually to be up to date). Many, many more
problems than with Linux or BSD. I actually had to fight the CEO on
upgrading to WinXP until that huge internet security hole was discovered
in it over XMas.
Even my laptop system here which dual-boots between the linux and W2K
and is fully patched and up to date blue-screens in Win2K once every 2
days or so whereas with the linux system I have yet to have any major
crash on anything but specific (usually beta) applications.
I can't speak to WinXP as I don't use it personally and most likely
won't if can help it. In fact, as Linux office suite offerings become
better at emulating the proprietary format of Word and Excel files I
really can't see big advantages to using windows at all quite honestly.
But, this is just what I think. I would encourage you to use whatever
makes you happy. I personally just like having the choice available to
me. I also dislike choices being made for me I cannot alter on computers
I own and paying outrageously inflated fees to use the products (to buy
a system with Windows and Office adds close to $1000 to a system here)
because really when you think about it, Windows is not a product but
just a brand of operating system. Some people like buying expensive
suits, dinners, or shoes too regardless of whether they are
significantly "better" than other
I also think that some of the more "do-it-yourself" liveaboards would be
interested in the linux/BSD option, both from the fierce vein of
do-it-yourself and independence in the group as well as the desire to
learn more about how their machines work and the much lower costs
involved. You can also run a very nice linux/BSD system on a system with
a much smaller hard drive or processor than on a comparable windows
system (think 5 year machine replacement rather than say, 2-3 years with
Windows). On this laptop for instance, I run my own mail server, web
server, secure shell server and can use integrated tools to manage
systems in other countries without even getting out of my PJs... =} Er,
but I digress... =}
Anyhow.. said more than enough on this subject already. Let's get back
to boats... =}
ciao!
Daryl.
