Good question -- I think most of the 3-stage ones are meant to work with
alternators that can keep up with them. The Heart I got said something
about needing at least a 60-amp alternator. I know they make much
    smaller alternators.

I would think that some 3-stage ones would have an adjustment for this.
The Heart I got does not. I would also think you could put a
potentiometer on the voltage sense line and fool the regulator into
asking for less current from the alternator. Have to experiment with it
    to get the right adjustment.

You can get good deals on alternators at junk yards -- I got one for $20
for a spare in case the installed one burns out.
