All things being equal, like weather, land, other boats, etc., and
thinking only about the geometry of it, if I had to go straight upwind,
I would go as far on each tack as possible, preferably tacking only once
during the entire trip, since you lose speed and time during the actual
tacks. There are many other considerations, though.
And with my luck, as soon as I got ready for the one tack halfway there,
the wind would swing around to directly ahead of my new course... :-)
