A quick way to tell if the regulator is supplying current to the
alternator's field when the engine is NOT running is to touch a
screwdriver to the end of the alternator's shaft at the center of its
drive pulley. If the field coils are energized the shaft will be
magnetized and the screwdriver blade will stick to it.
