I'd recommend that you try to take one more day and get the boat to
Appalacicola. From there, if you've got a weather window, you can jump
off to Clearwater, about 160 kn. From there south to Naples is IMHO
some of the nicest water for sailing in the states. Just north of
Clearwater is Caladesi State park, only accessable from by boat and has
wonderful beaches. You can find numerous marinas/resturants along the
ICW from Dunedin all the wat to Naples. A find place to spend the night
is Desoto National Memorial. It's protected from all but the worst NE
winds. It is in a cove with a great beach at the mouth to the Manatee
river. Crusing south from there after going out to the gulf is some of
the prettiest beach along Anamarie Island and Longboat Key that there is
in Florida. Unfortuantely the weather that time of year is
unpredictable so go with the flow and enjoy where you are and don't
expect to be able to get your boat back home when you plan to. Setting
a timetable for a cruise is a setting yourself up for disappointment.
You're making me want to go back. Unfortunately it would take me a
month to get there. 8(
There are lots of things to do in that area. I can't hope to describe
them all. Pick up a copy of one of the waterway guides. They help a
lot. I've got a couple of them for that area and I couldn't say that
either one was better than the other.
