Here is a little info on detectors. Photo electric smoke detectors do
require the presence of smoke to trip. Generally, they will detected
smoke in an open space up to 21 feet from the origin of incipience
within 60 seconds. The density of the smoke is an important factor as
the sensor uses infrared sensor in the chamber to detect the presence of
smoke. If there are any partitions or drops in ceiling of more than 12"
the distance is reduced. In some boats it may take more than on
detector to adequately detect a fire in time to do any good.
Also, once a fire starts in electrical units which have plastic or other
combustible as a component of the hardware the fire may persist even
after the fuse blows or power is removed. Burning product are not self
extinguishing. I have seen many microwave ovens burn down houses this
way.
When living aboard, it would be wise to have a complete burglar and fire
alarm connected to a central station which would then report the fire or
burglary to a proper authority. I have a combination alarm on my vessel
and it sends the signal to my central via special cell phone data set
which allows over 50 identifiable conditions to be monitored remotely.
In any event the central station reacts within seconds of the signal
condition and an appropriate action is taken.
If the fire alarm - the marina is notified first during regular hours
then the fire company. If burglary, a call is placed to the police,
marina. All other conditions are such as loss of power, high water,
freezer temp etc. are sent to me both on pager and cell phone. Of
course, while on board the key pad alerts us to any condition. We use
our central monitoring anywhere in the Verizon cell network on the East
Coast.
I have been in the security business for over 30 years and this is how I
have my boat setup. Of course, there are many others out there which
have a different approach, and I respect that. My system IMHO is the
most responsive.
