The previous owner of my boat did this, and I can attest that it doesn't
work in the long run. The foam wrap begins to disintegrate after only a few
years. I think that it's the banging against the inside of the mast and the
rivets, screws, etc. Every fall for the first few years I would have to
vacuum a small pile of this foam dust from the mast step.
The only way to do it is to drop the mast, and install a conduit inside the
mast. It's not difficult or very expensive. Dropping your mast should only
take an hour or so and it's inexpensive to do. It's never cost me more than
$100 each way. The whole job takes about a day. including drop, clean
inside of mast, remove wires, install conduit, run new wires, and restep.
