Incorrect. I've owned several digital cell phones, they've all been able to switch to analogue. They've all been dual mode phones. Tri-mode phones are generally used by people who travel to Europe where the frequencies are different. Dual mode phones can be "forced" into either modes. I've travelled to different areas of Ontario, and the phone beeps to let me know that it's gone analogue.
I generally replace the phone when the battery stops holding a charge. It's cheaper to get a new phone than to replace the battery
