Rick said "We have a superb night watchman--our Cairn terrier." Surely this
is the best solution. Dogs will hear/sense/smell the approach of strangers -
even friends. I know that there are drawbacks, but the ability of this hairy
device outweighs any objection.
With all the stuff Rick has forward, he must have a pretty bumpy bed. Still,
everything sounds great.
Karl's point about possessing a destructive device is well taken. The
possession of a "destructive device" is against federal law and is enforced
by the BATF. However, I was contemplating offshore delivery and use. As with
machine guns, as far as the feds are concerned you can pay an annual permit
fee and be allowed to possess them. Still, our states, and foreign
governments may have laws against private possession. For some silly reason,
California doesn't like machine guns!
