I was thinking about this today while walking at lunch. I'm a gun owner,
but I've always assumed that I would not carry one when cruising given the
hassle that could be involved. Some of the recent incidents have made me
re-think this. I would think that blowing a few beer cans out of the sky
might be a viable deterrant to an approaching vessel of ill intent...
However, assuming I don't carry a weapon, what fall-back plans do other
cruisers keep in the backs of their brains in case a bad dream starts to
play out? The 20,000 volt lifelines sound fun, but hey, I'd for sure blow
myself to never never land. I can just hear it - "what does this switch
do?" while I'm peeing over the side.... BBBZZZZZ!
Seriously - you've got a boat approaching, you've warned them off, they
haven't identified themselves.. Now what? throw a bucket of gasoline at
their boat and point a flare gun at them?
I think I would also be broadcasting the details of the situation over the
radio and trying to contact some local authority if I had the time, hoping
that the other vessel hear that I was letting others know what was
happening.
I don't mean to sound paranoid, but my engineer brain tends to want to think
such scenarios out so that if needed, I know what I'm going to do - no
different than any other situation that may arise on a boat.
Best Regards,
Brent
