Perhaps he might have fared better with a shotgun loaded with #4 buckshot.
However, he was one against many. Highly qualified operators would wait for
the opportunity to surprise a superior force. This is easy to say when your
mates aren't all out on deck. Nonetheless, how do you know when these are
nice pirates who just want to take your stuff, smash your radios, and leave
you tied-up. They could be nasty pirates who do not leave witnesses and
molest women. The best defense is to not be there. Ask and listen to
reliable officials in larger ports and avoid hot spots. When you hear that
the local Brazilian police already have these fellows in custody, what does
that tell you? It says that they were known to the police. I know, given the
publicity, they could have just rounded-up the usual suspects. However, the
    suspects have already claimed self-defense.

Given the fact that we don't have all the necessary details, I'd like to
suggest that you develop both a philosophy and an SOP should X, Y, or Z
occur. What are you willing to do? Whatever, it is, you must act
immediately. If you have opted for action, then you must conduct drills to
attempt to make these actions reflexive. AND, you have to be sure who the
opposition is. Blasting away armed officials is consider bad manners amongst
    thoughtful cruisers.
