First, let me say that we are preparing for this trip right now, but have
never done it -- so I do not speak from experience. But, I would say it has
a lot to do with what kind of cruising you intend to do and what you are
comfortable with. Be sure to get and read Bruce van Sant's Passages South.
You can go all the way from FL to South America with only a handful of
overnight passages and rarely be out of sight of land! I know of a number of
marginally seaworthy vessels that have done this by watching their weather
closely and traveling in short hops during settled periods. On the other
hand, I certainly recommend getting the best boat you can afford! Bear in
mind that weather is very unpredictable and you are certain to misjudge on
occasions. Your intended course is straight against average winds of 15-20
knots -- not something to try in a log raft.
Good luck and keep us posted,
JP

<< Hi folks- I'm curious how strong a boat I will need to cruise from South
Florida to the Bahamas and down to the Virgins. Do i need a really strong
boat assuming I stay out of the area during hurricane season? How much open
water blue water cruising is this trip? Jim >>
