There are points in favor of putting the documentation number in the living
spaces, particularly that there is no reason to visit any other part of the
boat, unload any lockers, or crawl into other spaces to inspect it.
On larger commercial vessels where the documentation number is (usually)
welded into the keel, the trip to inspect that number has become the USCGs
most "productive" ruse to inspect everything along the way.
