We did this and it worked well. I laid out the lettering in a
font that was fairly simple, right size to put on the piece of
wood (maple, I think). Then we put the paper with the layout on
the wood and traced the lettering with an exacto knife. After
that, Chris use his Dremel to route out the lettering and then
varnished it (sides beveled) and up it went. We have
the boat name, tonnage, hull number, and CG documentation number.
It looks nice. But in order to get all that on a reasonable size
plaque, it took a bit of trial and error with fonts, sizing,
layout, etc.
