When this post fist appeared, I thought of 'wood burning'. As kids, we used to have a 'wood burning set' that consisted of, what looked like a small soldering iron and a small piece of plywood. We used the iron to burn (discolor) the wood in patterns. Some, more artistic people, turned out beautiful designs burned into all sorts of wood objects.
Could be that some careful lettering, a wood burning tool, and a bit of finish would produce a respectable, permanent, result...?

Subject: RE: lv-ab: documentation number
But lettering--vinyl or paint--isn't going to cut it for a documentation
number. It must be indelible--carved into a major structural member, a cast
plate welded onto a steel or aluminum boat, or in some other way so
permanently mounted that it's alteration, obliteration, or removal is easily
detected.
We have a board with the No. routed into it and then the board is stained
and mounted with screws onto a bulkhead. It was the POs doing and, frankly,
I didn't think it would stand scrutiny, but we've been boarded twice and the
coasties haven't said anything. You can see part of it here, above and to
the left of the stove http://www.mouseherder.com/xapic/pix05.html
Also, don't forget the No. before the actual number and the Net xx after the
number, they're required.
