Hi Sam, here is a brief paragraph from the USCG site:
    Item 2 - Registration / Documentation:

Registration or Documentation papers must be on board and available.
Documentation numbers must be permanently marked on a visible part of the
interior structure. The documented boat's name and hailing port must be
displayed on the exterior hull in letters not less than 4 inches in height.
To be documented a boat must be 5 net tons or greater.

You can put the numbers anywhere permanent that can be shown to a the Coast
Guard, they can be inside a locker fixed to a structure or bulkhead, in the
engine room (most often seen) or even in a cockpit locker. Or a nice
engraved wood one fixed to an exposed bulkhead look nice too. Essentially
anywhere where you can show it to somebody who wants to see it. BTW - I am
a Courtesy Marine Examiner for the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

    Good morning all,
I need to mount my vessel documentation number in the interior of my
sailboat. I have seen some that look pretty nasty. Any suggestions
on an attractive way to display the number? The interior is all teak
and very pretty, I hate to stick some ugly sign in there. I know
someone on the list must have a good idea. Also, I recall that
someone on the list does lettering and stuff like that, please
identify yourself. I would like to keep the cash flow on the inside
    if possible.

    Thanks,
    Sam
