But lettering--vinyl or paint--isn't going to cut it for a documentation
number. It must be indelible--carved into a major structural member, a cast
plate welded onto a steel or aluminum boat, or in some other way so
permanently mounted that it's alteration, obliteration, or removal is easily
detected.
We have a board with the No. routed into it and then the board is stained
and mounted with screws onto a bulkhead. It was the POs doing and, frankly,
I didn't think it would stand scrutiny, but we've been boarded twice and the
coasties haven't said anything. You can see part of it here, above and to

Also, don't forget the No. before the actual number and the Net xx after the
number, they're required.
