I read your message but I do my email at night and most of my brain has gone
to sleep by then so I can't comment on the joules.
There are two sources of "the spike", the starter via the arc across the
opening contacts, plus the solenoid coil.
On most of our boats the starting circuit is separate from the house circuits
so the spike is limited to the starting circuits and does not appear on the
house circuits.
I have an anchor windlass that pulls up to 200 amps on the house circuits. I
have never had an electronics failure from a spike from the windlass that I
am aware of although one elderly GPS does turn off each time the windlass is
energized.
We are leaving Norfolk southbound on the ICW tomorrow morning. The weather
was fantastic while we were here and we had a wonderful time as usual.
Enjoyed the sparkling MacArthur Center mall, saw three movies there: Iron
Monkey - two thumbs down, (Crouching Tiger... (which we loved) it is not!);
Riding in Cars.. - OK if you like epics about dysfunctional people; Monsters
Inc. was delightful and hilarious - two big thumbs up. We bought some stuff
for the boat at Restoration Supply (drawer pulls and PV flashlights). The
Chrysler museum is a "don't miss". They have a fabulous glass collection -
rooms full of Tiffany.
