Rick, you are forgetting the age old mechanic's trick of jumpering the
solenoid bolts with a screwdriver or something.
To see if the starter is really bad or if it is the wiring, solenoid or
some other part of the circuit that is bad, most mechanics will jumper the
contacts. If you happen to be touching the metallic part as the voltage
collapses, you do get a kick.
And if you are very sweaty, your skin resistance is so low you do get a jolt.
Depending on where you other hand or feet are placed you can get a nasty
jolt and some current going through you as it returns to the battery
negative.
Been there, done it and lived to tell the tale. Even have the knife blade
with the burn marks to prove it. < grin>
