I think I know what point Gary is making. However, . . .
The flip side of the coin is that West Marine offers not only convenience
but sometims the only viable source for buyers in remote locations -
globally.
Seattle, Miami and Annapolis has a wealth of alternatives from which to
obtain suitable marine equipment.
But how about when your boat breaks down in some little out of the way
place. Or half way around the world?
I have had customers email me from China, Egypt, Malaysia, and all sort
of places in between. They had a problem with our equipment or thought
they had. In many cases they were able to call a West Marine store and
order all the bits and pieces they needed and the stuff arrived on time
wherever they needed it.
If you phoned up Joes discount Hardware in Skookum Hollow do you really
think you would get the same kind of service.
Yes convenience always has a price. But how would you like to pay a
service/repair person to spend half a day or more driving all over the
place looking for an assortment of bits and pieces in order to complete a
job you needed done?
I can guarantee that you would spend more than the savings achieved by
price comparison shopping.
So if you are fortunate enough to live in a big urban center with lots of
choices and alternatives count your blessings!
If you don't; chances are the West Marine catalog is both reference
manual, technical advisor and often provides the guide for showing the
local discounter what you want so they can specially order it; . . . or
you can mail order it from West.
Cheers
Arild
