    Norm,

    What you describe is called a random wire antenna. The wire that sticks up
    must be tuned with an antenna tuner which makes up a portion of the above
    ground antenna, the other portion of the antenna is the ground. The more
    important
    part of this equation is the ground.

    Also, a dipole in different configurations can be used in sailboats. A
    sloper or an
    inverted 'V' are two types, or unless you have a lot of free airspace
    between masts, an actual dipole.
    None of the dipole types require a ground plane because they
    are considered balanced antennas. The radio chassis however does require a
    good DC
    ground with either the random wire or dipole.
