    The way I look at this is to imagine the ham antenna as one half of a dipole
    antenna turned up vertically. The pole sticking up is *the* antenna, and the
    pole sticking down is the ground. The more electrically massive the ground,
    the more the antenna can push against. It is almost like when you push a
    dead car with your body. The hard part is not pushing against the car, but
    getting a grip on the street with your feet. The radio ground needs to be at
    least as electromagnetically massive as the antenna to function as the
    downward pole of the dipole.
