Mike -
Actually, using a vacuum system is 'environmentally' a good idea - not to
mention that you don't end up swimming in a cloud of toxic dust while you
work.
The boatyard where we live rents out the Fein 6 or 8" random orbital sanders
and matching vacuum - and we're now hooked on the system. It's just so damn
easy not to have to deal with the large amounts of dust and particulates
that a high speed sander generates - you can see what you're doing,
woodgrain is left open and not full of junk, and your paper rarely clogs.
Yes, it's a pain in the patootie to have to deal with the hose, but you do
get used to it and eventually use it like an extended handle or support.
Cheers
Jim

Don't the environmentalists give you grief using the shop vac?
