I have been grinding off the bottom paint and gelcoat from my hull.
Some of the bottom paint is sort of rubbery and doesn't sand at all, it it
the gloosy stuff that extended above the water line forming the boot stripe.
I don't know what it is, but I would never use it....
The lye/cornstarch mixture does dissolve it, but it also leaves it soft so
it rubs off on everything.
For sanding and grinding I have been using a 4" grinder with some special
disks called "spirocut" from Fiberlay in Seattle. These are very coarse with
a radial finger pattern that throws out the junk. They are made for grinding
through fiberglass and work like a charm. This may be more than you need for
just paint removal. If the bottom is good, I would use the lye mix and a
pressure washer followed by a small orbital sander with 36 grit. then 80
grit.
You can get away with coarser grits on the high speed orbital sanders.
