Wood Ph.D. This sounds more like a foil head stay. A lot of the " go fast" types have a slotted foil that the sail is fed into like a furling head stay. The theory is smoother air flow over leading edge of the sail. and if there a two slots then sail changes can be made faster by putting the new sail up before the old sail is dropped.
