    Lets just make the statement "never" relative. Saturated wood with Expoxy
    does not have a tendency to rot like unprotected wood.

    As for the mast step stringers without West it lasted 20 years. It was only
    glassed on the ends and now it is fully glassed end to end. I figure it will
    last a very, very, very long time...certainly much longer than I will own
    her - so relatively speaking for me is never.

    If you take 50% west/ 50% acetone (or MEK) and mix well it penetrates well
    into the wood. I have used this method well with West for many years with
    success. I've heard it already so please don't waste your time starting a
    flame war over the do's and don't of using acetone for penetrating.
