Yeah, the regs say that the stand-on vessel shall maintain course and speed
when being overtaken. However, especially in narrow channels, guys that are
much faster and throwing a big bow wave, will usually give you a chance to
pull over and slow for an easy pass. Still, you are correct, every boat
operator is liable for damage by their wake.

=Since when is the stand down vessel supposed to throttle back when being
=overtaken? By law, all vessels are responsible for their wakes and the
=damage it causes. I know it is rare, but I do know of a motor vessel who's
=owner, throttles back when passing, slows way down if passing kayaks, or
    =moored boats. Rare indeed.

=I'll tell you what drives me crazy on the ICW. It's not the guys doing
=22-kts trying to cover 200 miles a day (although they do rank third, behind
=these guys I'm about to tell you about and bridges with restricted hours)
=but the guys in Trawlers traveling only a knot or two faster than most

=Easy pass my ass. They just want to play with the big boys and bully whom
=ever they can. Several that I wouldn't cut back for, once the boat came
=even with us, took minutes, long, smoky minutes, for them to finally creep

=What a crock. Gee, and they couldn't bounce me either.
