    The first rule of seamanship is to keep the water out of the boat.

    Find every hole in the boat and be able to close them all to the sea if need
    be. There are a finite number of openings.

    The only way the boat will sink is for water to enter it. If you prevent
    this from happening, the boat will never sink.
