Dear List, the mate and I spent the day in Ft. Lauderdale today doing some
tire-kicking on a possible boat purchase. We've been looking for several
months now with a criteria on full-keel, split rig, center-cockpit, 37' to
45'. Other than that, we've sought boats that could be solidly classified as
a "handy-man's special", but not quite a "hopeless cause". Our overall
budget is $40K. This has led us to several brands of Tawianese boats: Island
Trader, Islander, Formosa, Hardin. Whats the rep on these boats? They're all
mid 80's construction. The broker says once the new boats were ordered from
the yard, the hulls were farmed out to families who finished the boat out on
spec, hence lot's of variation. True? We've found some re-fitted out very
nicely so we know it's a financially reasonable proposition. The best deal
we've found so far (hey, we're looking to steal something here) has a
horribly rotten deck core/toerail/stantion area (all stemming from teak deck
leaks) and subsequently, mostly rotten interior wood from fresh water leaks.
Certainly a gut job, but then you could redesign it any way you wanted. I do
fibreglass (and a damn good job of demolition too), but not carpentry, so my
maintenance budget would be a healthy dose of skilled labor along with my
sweat equity. I'd rather buy a project outright and invest in it over the
next two or three years than borrow and then give the money back to the
bank. I would appreciate any first-hand info on these boat's construction,
particularly the deck/hull joint and coring. Any other ideas
welcome......Steve
PS Looked a SUPER-fine Westsail 32 today, too! Rick, how do you stand such a
narrow boat:)
