Your accounting for an easy pass is exactly what we did and what I was
referring to a "close pass". We did experience hundreds of very nice
passes with never a problem. The eyes of the captain on a SB or
Trawler sometimes grow very large when a 45 foot PB appears at the stern
with the PB bow high while settling in the water.
We were running Turbo which allow us to almost jump back up on plane in
30 seconds after the pass. We always passed with our stern wave pushing
us passed the SB leaving no wake for the SB to contend with if he Turn
to our stern. As soon as he was directly behind us we would go turbo
and be outta there. The SB never got a bump.
On the other hand if he turns away or does not slow and turn behind us
there is a good chance that he may tangle with our departing wake.
Like you said, When it is done proper it is a beautiful dance.
