    Further on my Engel 45

Measuring the inside of the food basket indicates that the actual space
available for food storage is 37 quarts, not 45. Engel apparently ignores
the space taken up by the evaporator and food basket.

The current draw upon start-up is about 3A, which settles to 2.2A almost
instantly, then slowly eases to 1.8A. These measurements were done using
several clip leads and may change when I get heavier wire to the unit.

In an ambient temperature of 71 deg, and a box temperature of 36 deg, the
unit ran for 6.7 hours in a period of 28.75 hours yielding 5.6 hours in 24.
Presuming a 2 amp draw, the unit used 11.2 amp/hours in one day. These are
first pass figures and all are approximate. I will do more later when I get
some heavier wire installed. These tests were done just as the unit arrived,
without any additional insulation. I was impressed.

After taking the cover off the compressor section to add a wire from the
compressor (it runs on 13.5 vac) for the elapsed time meter, I had a chance
to see that the unit is quite well constructed. In a world filled with
machines made just good enough to get off the shelf, the Engel, built like
everything should be built, looks magnificent. You can often tell quality by
heft - the Engel is no lightweight.

One bothersome feature is the slip-off hinges that let the lid slide off even
when one doesn't want to remove it. I might look into making some sort of
stop for that, but it's a matter of just how much of a bother it is in the
    longer run.

I am waiting for Engel to come back to me with some answers to questions I
had. They had to query Japan for the answers. When I get them I will write
    up a full report.

It is now not a matter of whether the Engel is a good unit, but nailing down
the actual specs and writing a real manual.

If you are in the market for a compressor cooled "Igloo" style refrigerator,
I do not hesitate to recommend the Engel.

BTW, the cardboard shipping box was one of the most impressive I have seen in
    a long time.

    Norm
