I come back down to 1000 RPM, which moves me at about 9 knots, is not a "no
wake" speed, but produces a LOT less wake than I produce on plane.
If I have to come by in close quarters then I drop all the way back to
idle; that gives me a speed through water of about 6 knots.
If the skipper being overtaken has brains he will fall in behind me once
I've overtaken and am safely clear; I can then open the distance between
us to 50-100 yards and then accelerate and you're in the clean water
directly behind me.
I see a LOT of people around here though that do some really dangerous
stuff though. There are a bunch of sportfish pilots around here (both
private and charter) that love to come roaring through the jetties with
the hammers down, threatening to bury anyone with a little boat in there.
The pass is dangerous enough when the tide is going out and the wind
offshore without adding that to the mix.
There's little excuse for that kind of thing, but I see it a LOT around
here, along with all kinds of other insanity.
