Margaret,
Don't build a holding tank yourself. You'll regret it when it leaks!! Call
around to some tank builders and see if you can find one that works with
poly. They should be able to build just about any shape you want. I'd also
stay away from bladder type tanks. They're a disaster waiting to happen.
The problem with these isn't the tanks themselves, it the operator emptying
it! I've seen more than a few bladders ruined by inattentive waste removal
operators.
Also if you do have some one build it, get it built with all fittings
exiting the top of the tank, including the discharge fitting. Have them put
a tube on the inside that goes to the bottom of the tank. This way if a
fitting does ever start to leak, the contents won't begin to empty
themselves!
Pierre.

Has anybody had experience doing this themselves, and could offer any tips?

epoxy resin, with internal baffles. The only place to put it will be under
the forward V-berth. Holding tanks are not common where we live, but will be
required as we go further up the Australian coast.
