A quick trip around the "north forty". :)
We stopped at Annapolis mainly to have some work done on the boat and for
Jackie to visit her Dad for a fortnight. We enjoyed it tremendously but
damn! there are a lot of boats there! I thought Florida was crowded...
Had some steel work done and now we are the proud owners of a pair of
stainless steel "racks" that will hold six Kyocera 120 Watt solar
panels. Three on each side.
We cancelled our order for a wind generator 'cause with 6 big Kyoceras we
can go into the power company business. Now if I could just figure out how
to sell all the surplus to other boats in the anchorages we visit... ;)
Went up to Baltimore and really enjoyed our visit. It rained on us but it
still could not dampen our enjoyment of a fine city that has done a very
creditable job of rehabilitating its downtown. It has been many years
since we were last there and there were quite a few changes... all for the
better. The National Aquarium was the highlight of our visit.
The Inner Harbor was a bit tense because of the terrorist attack on the
WTC. Baltimore has its own WTC right on the inner harbor seawall. We did
not anchor in the inner harbor, although we could have. Just too much
water taxi and tourist boat traffic. We anchored in front of the Safeway
food store and took the dink the mile or so into town. The dinghy dock at
the wall in front of the submarine USS Torsk was closed and we had to tie
to the west wall in front of the restaurants. The only disappointing thing
was the incredible amount of trash in the water there. They have a
'vacuum' boat going full time to try and clean things up but it appears to
be a losing battle. It probably has a lot to do with prevailing winds
keeping the stuff trapped there. At any rate, entering and leaving
Baltimore gave us our only scare this whole trip about perhaps clogging our
cooling intake with plastic "junk". We motored through thousands of yards
of the crap.
Left Baltimore and overnighted in the anchorage in Swan Creek, just north
of Rock Hall. Nice place. Well protected from any direction. When we
arrived at about 1500, there were 3 boats there. When we turned in for the
evening there were 14. All quiet and courteous however, no generators and
no loud music. Dead calm evening and killer mosquitoes though. Not as big
as our Florida varieties (i.e., they were too small to carry a flashlight
with them as they looked for you in the dark) but just as irritating.
Wandered up the Chester River today and paid a visit to Chestertown. Nice
place but too "touristy" for me. Jackie loved it. Oh well, gotta keep the
Boat Babe happy too. :)
We are in the anchorage at Chestertown tonight. We anchored well away from
the 'herd' when we arrived but latecomers have anchored practically on top
of us since then. They are all ashore and have been since we returned from
dinner. Hopefully they are not staying the night. :(
We get nervous when folks anchor too close as most do not understand a
lightweight trimaran swings to wind instead of tide at times and all the
monohull types end up pointing one way and we the other.
Heading down to Kent Narrows tomorrow, maybe as far as St. Michaels, maybe
not. We are in no hurry. Any suggestions for stopovers are welcomed.
Any 'listers' in the area are welcome to give us a hail and come aboard for
sundowners if nearby.
Fair Winds,
Tom
