In a message dated 9/19/01 7:45:48 PM Eastern Daylight Time,
     writes:

    << Hi All,
I just returned to my boat after removing about 400 gallons
of seawater from another boat here at Oyster cove. That is
maybe half the water in the bilge. When I started the swim
platform at the stern was about 1 inch above the water, now
it's about 7 inches. The electric bilge pumps don't seem to
work. Using 5 gallon buckets I filled one, lifted it to deck
level, filled the next then climbed out of the engine room
to lift and pour over the stern.<snip> >>

I have a manual bilge pump (Whale Gusher) mounted on a board that works great
for things like this. The suction side has enough hose to reach any part of
the bilge from the nearest hatch (about 10' in my case), and the discharge
side has about 3-4' of hose attached. With this arrangement, I can position
the hose in the bilge (weight it down with something) and stand on deck near
a hatch to pump. The pump moves 1/2 to 1 gallon per stroke and makes quick
work of even large accumulations of water.

Despite having more than enough electric bilge pumping capacity, it amazes me
how much use I get from this pump (and not just on the boat). You can put
something like this together for less than $150 US and it's well worth it --
especially when you're facing bucket bailing a lot of water.
