    There seems to be a great potential for error here - I sure would hate to
    assume that, because I saw exhaust, the sailboat was under power. My HD
    starter spins the Perkins fast enough to pump out water, engine running or
    not, and the generator exhaust looks just like the engine exhaust from any
    distance.

    If I were sailing with the generator running and a powerboat cut me off, I
    would definitely take umbrage. As a long-time power boater and sailor, my
    'rule of thumb' is if the sails are up, assume he is sailing unless he's
    showing the shape for motoring, or going dead into the wind ; - )
