Money is always a consideration and
    =professionally built
    =lockers are a added expense.

Bare, exposed, externally mounted aluminum tanks with a small water proof
box for the regulator are certainly an acceptable. Mounting is the problem.

You don't say where you are, but if you're in Annapolis, check at KATO
marine. They weld some really interesting external mounts for propane tanks
that clamp to railings and such. (I assume that they have a website, but I
don't know). You will pay gem quality prices for their work, but it's good.

If you want to build a wooden locker that would sit on deck or on the coach
roof, you could mount the tanks in it. What you have to do is look at how
the tanks would drain, and I don't mean water. Propane, being heavier than
air, will flow down like water, but it also blows. So look at how the fumes
would flow away from the tank if there were a failure--moving forward,
anchored with a bit yawing port and starboard, and in a no wind situation.

Glassing in a locker after the fact is always a dicey proposition. I have a
manufactured propane locker that I keep in the lazaretto. It's vented and
has never failed. On the other hand, I always wonder. I have propane alarm
sensors under the locker, under the stove, and under the bilge, yet I don't
    feel good about the installation.
