    =I often start up the engine well before I get to my marina, to warm it
    =up. If it is not in gear and I am still sailing, I do not display the
    =white steaming light.

    Only when your propulsion is engaged do you have to switch to steaming mode.
    Although, my experience on the Chesapeake has led me to the conclusion that
    a great number of people just turn on every damn light on the boat--mast
    head tricolor, anchor, side lights, steaming lights, spreader lights so, I
    guess, they don't have to think about it.
