This indeed is the Accepted Wisdom in the textbooks. The Bruce and CQR are
not good in weed. In the weedy Bay of Quinte and Thousand Islands, I use
what the "Ports Guide" suggests: a Bruce with a big Danforth on eight feet of
chain attached to the tripline eye of the Bruce. I lay it very carefully and
test it, but I also pray for no big thunderstorms! A folding Fisherman or
"Yachtman" would solve this problem better.

The Authorities are sort of divided, and in my experience there isn't much
to choose between them; however, I think the Bruce is extremely good at
resetting itself if disturbed, so long as it isn't choking on a gobful of
weeds. On the other hand, the CQR will creep less than the Bruce in mud and
sand; of course, a properly-set Danforth will creep even less on an ideal
bottom, but its re-setting ability is poor (wants to bounce and fly).
Anyway, I have trusted the Bruce for eight years, and it has never let me
down, even at a scope of 3:1 in a 60-knot thunderstorm (in mud).
