It is personally very distressing and very challenging to me to watch
Palestinians on TV celebrating the tremendous destruction and death of
thousands of innocent men, women and children. I must admit I have
difficulty in understanding their cause for celebration. I'm not sure what
I would personally do if anyone walked up to me and laughed and celebrated
this occasion.

Subject: RE: lv-ab: Question for non-US members on WTC terrorist attack
Here in France, it is the *ONLY* news story besides the steps the French are
taking to increase public safety (they actually blew up 2 cars parked too
long in front of the US embassy and another one in front of the Canadian
embassy yesterday).
They are having televised specials each night (at least last night)
including even a BBC documentary special (dubbed unfortunately) on Osama bin
Laden and it is the topic of conversation everywhere. Even my cab driver
this morning wanted to know what I thought this morning (mistaking me for an
American).
And, from what I can tell from my friends round the world (a lot of them),
the whole world is watching.
As for your "concerted effort", I don't think you have to worry that the US
will have support. The UN even talked about invoking Article 5 of its
charter for expedited action by the US and help from all member nations.
The sole thing I worry about is that the reprisals and escalation are just
and accurate. I do not want innocent people killed who were not involved and
would never in their deepest darkest hearts support this sort of atrocity. A
grubby bunch of say 50-150 terrorists should not be able to decide the fate
of the people of a country (or the world) with one horrible act.
Daryl.

Objet: lv-ab: Question for non-US members on WTC terrorist attack
Sorry for the lack of live aboard content but since the list is distributed
all over the world I was curious about media coverage of the attack on the
World Trade Center in NY and the Pentagon in Washington.
Even though I live in the middle of the US very far removed (physically but
not in spirit) from the carnage left by the murderers out east, I have a
sense of profound sorrow, loss, frustration as well as almost overwhelming
anger because I'm an American. Our media has helped us to understand what
is going on and to some extent helped us deal with the tragedy.
Our television stations have had non-stop coverage since the first plane
struck and 50% of our newspapers have been devoted to it.. I expect this
since the attack was against the US (at least it was yesterday). What kind
of TV and newspaper coverage is the event getting in other countries? I
guess what I'm trying to find out, given the horrendous magnitude of what
was done, is whether this event is perceived in other countries as a world
wide threat that could visit anywhere or just a "local" phenomena that
doesn't really merit very extensive coverage. Another way of putting this
is: Are we on our own or are other countries at the point where there might
be a chance for some kind of concerted and meaningful worldwide effort to
put a stop to the killing?
I've tried to go on-line and access foreign papers but can't really tell
much since most of them are in languages I cannot understand.
