=EVERYTHING that attaches to the frame was
=trash. Estimated repair costs exceeded the original price of
=the bike.
That's the reason, when we run up on the beach and plan to stay awhile,
that we buy a couple of island bikes. No storage aboard, no continual
maintenance, no theft problem (they're all butt ugly and don't stand out),
no dinghying it too and from the boat for safekeeping, plus they're readily
available, they're cheap to buy, and they're resalable when you leave. If
your bike does go on unauthorized walk about, you haven't lost much--and
most of the time it finds its way back to you anyway.
In fact, most of the places we've cruised seemed to have a supply of
"community" bikes that lived near the dinghy dock, so we seldom have had to
buy a bike. If you're into touring with a bike, I can't think of many
places we've been that didn't have a first class bike rental shop, as well
as organized tours and trips.
