My old Motorola 55 amp alternator seems to have developed problems with the
internal regulator. At 1100 RPM I read a maximum of 12.8 volts into a well
discharged battery. This seems to be good time to switch to a proper 100
amp alternator and external regulator such as the Balmars. I noticed that
Foley has a "house" alternator that they claim is a suitable, but
significantly less expensive, alternative to the Balmar which they also
sell. Does anyone have any experience with them (the cheaper alternators,
not Foley -- I am aware of the debate on the company)? Any other
recommendations?
The Newport Boat Show is next week and it might be a good chance to haggle.
