COBRA only *allows* you to pay what your employer did for medical coverage. If your employer paid $1000 per month for your coverage, now YOU have the same *opportunity* to pay that $1000 all by yourself. What a deal! not.

Subject: Re: lv-ab: Health Insurance For Cruisers?
All,
Yes, I would certainly take advantage of the Cobra offering but that's only
an 18 month proposition. Need to time the retirement with the departure to
maximize the benefits. I believe there are also certain stipulations with
Cobra (needs to be the same type and amount of coverage as before leaving
the company, etc).
Apparently there's no cruising association or boating advocate that
underwrites health insurance coverage for cruisers?
So what are folks doing ... are they doing without? I mean ... $475USD per
month per couple seems like a pretty outrageous expense for the average
cruising budget. I guess I'm just starting to wake up to the fact that
having a fulltime job is almost like wearing handcuffs!!
Best regards,
John
