Check out the CPT Autopilot at http://www.selfsteer.com/cpt/
It's expensive, but I think it's well worth the money. I have used an
Autohelm 3000 and a Navico (now Raytheon), and they both let me down, due
to serious and obvious engineering deficiencies.
I saw the CPT autopilot on display at the Miami Boat Show a few years ago,
shortly after suffering continuous grief from an Autohelm pilot, and the
engineering appeared to be superior by an order of magnitude. To say that
I was impressed is an understatement.
This is the most powerful above-deck autopilot on the market, and is built
rugged enough to look like military spec equipment. The demo I saw was
running for several days with the control head and motor completely
submerged in water. This model is on record as having steered boats of up
    to 72 ft.
I have not used one, but if I was in the market for a new autopilot today
the CPT is the model I would most assuredly buy. For what it's worth,
Practical Sailor also gave it top rating.

    Bob
